During the 3rd World Congress on Intensive and Critical Care Medicine, Washington DC 1981, the first General Assembly convened.
The appointed Delegates (number per country in brackets) represented most existing and emerging Societies of Intensive Care.
On its meeting of the 24th of May 1981, the General Assembly approved the Constitution of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine.
Since then, World Congresses have been held in Jerusalem (1985), Kyoto (1989), Madrid (1993), and Ottawa (1997). The 8th World Congress was held in Sydney in 2001.
In 2002 the WFSICCM counts 48 societies (45 physicians' societies and 3 nurses' societies) in 43 countries of the world.
The total estimated membership is of 24,200 physicians. (Nurses societies obviously are of much higher number, taking into account,
for example, that the American Association of Critical Care Nurses alone counts 76,000 members).
New societies are invited to establish contact with the aim of becoming members of the WFSICCM.
