Mercedes Palomar, MD is Chief of Section at the Department of Intensive Care at the Hospital Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona (Spain). She is since 1990, Associated Professor of Toxicología at the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona.
She qualified as a specialist in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the Hospital Vall d’Hebron of the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, She wrote her Doctorate of Medicine in 1993 on Epidemiology and Management of Serious Acute Intoxications.
She has been Member of the Board of the Spanish Society of Intensive Care Medicine (Sociedad Española de Medicina Intensiva, Crítica y Unidades Coronarias) (1997-2001). She has formerly been Coordinator of the Working Group of Infectious Diseases (1997-1999) and the Working Group of Toxicology (2002-2005) of the Spanish Society of Intensive Care Medicine. She is Vice-Coordinator of the Working Group of Critical Care of the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases. She has been Member of the Board of the Pan-American and Iberian Federation of Critical Care Medicine (1998-2002).

In the last 20 years she has been involved in the study and control of infectious diseases in critical patients. She has collaborated in the development of HELICS, the European Program of Surveillance of Nosocomial Infections.
She has been involved as researcher in several multicenter clinical trials about anti-infective treatments in critically ill patients and epidemiological studies. She has published about 40 articles in peer-review medical journals, written chapters in books and presented more than 200 abstracts in about these topics.
