Flavio M. B. Maciel was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1954 and graduated in Medicine, in 1978, from University Federal de Sao Paulo. He completed his Residence in General Practice at Santa Casa de Sao Paulo School of Medicine in 1982 and obtained his board certification in Critical Care Medicine in 1984, from AMIB (Brazilian Association of Critical Care Medicine). He trained in Critical Care Medicine at Free University of Brussels, Belgium, under the direction of Jean-Louis Vincent, in 1993, and than joined the University of Sao Paulo, where he is now Associate Professor of Medicine. He is also head of the Intensive Care Unit of Hospital Municipal Dr. Arthur Ribeiro de Saboya, São Paulo, Brazil.
His research interests include inflammation, sepsis, trauma and neurological critical care. He published more than 20 papers and over 10 chapters in several books, all related to Critical Care and Internal Medicine.
