Francisco Javier Hurtado Bredda was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1955. He obtained his Medical degree at the School of Medicine of the Universidad de la República in 1982 and became Intensivist after completing his postgraduate training program in Intensive Care Medicine in 1986.

From 1990 to 1992 he was a Fogarty International Fellow of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at the Pulmonary Division of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. During this period he worked with Dr. Guillermo Gutierrez in basic research projects related to sepsis, septic shock, oxygen transport and metabolism and tissue oxygenation. Since 1982 he had different academic positions as Assistant and Associate Professor in the Departments of Pathophysiology, Critical Care Medicine and the Pulmonary Function Test Laboratory of the Critical Care Unit, University Hospital.

He was speaker, panelist or chair in several scientific meetings and congress where he also presented more than 60 abstracts. He is a member of the Thorax Latin American Association (ALAT) and the Uruguayan Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SUMI).

He was President of the IX Uruguayan Congress of Intensive Care Medicine in 2003 and he is actually Vice President of the Uruguayan Society of Intensive Care Medicine.

Publications: more than 60 abstracts, 12 book chapters and 19 manuscripts in peer reviewed journals.
